  • Dålågjel is Hans P. Kjorstads third album as a leader for Motvind Records. The music premiered in concert form in 2022 when he, joined by the all-star ensemble of Rasmus Kjorstad, Helga Myhr, Kenneth Lien and Astrid Garmo, enchanted audiences at Motvind and Jørn Hilme-stemnet, with timelessly transcendental renderings of old Norwegian folk music material.

Dålågjel is based on archival footage of traditional tunes from the Gudbrandsdal, Halligdal, Valdres, Setesdal and Telemark regions of Norway. With diligent fidelity to the source material, Kjorstad impressively maintains the tonality and rhythm of different highly personal past traditions, while letting his own creativity shine brightly, through deliciously lavish arrangements, and production wizardry.

The instrumentation includes the 36-string Indian zither-like swarmandal, tanpura and harmonium, in addition to langeleik, mouth harp, octave and hardanger fiddles; allowing the music’s inherent harmonic information to be gloriously expanded into a peacefully ecstatic paradise of microtonal bliss.

In the event of Dålågjel inspiring one to look deeper into the material, track list with source information is attached and will definitely prove rewarding and insightful. Happy digging!
