In 2022 Norwegian drummer Tollef Østvang enlisted veteran UK improvisers Trevor Watts (saxophone) and John Edwards (bass), to form a new trio, as a commission from the Motvind festival.

From the get-go, the three unleashed a remarkably unified onslaught of blissful intensity. Luckily the band felt just as excited as the audience, and since their initial offering in the middle of the Norwegian woods, the group has since embarked on several European tours; further sharpening their razor-sharp interplay.

Their debut release, “In the know”, was recorded live in concert; organized by our favourite concert series, Blow Out, at our favourite club, Kafé Hærverk in Oslo.

In recent years, many have become aware of the Egyptian oud player and composer Aly Eissa. He has long been a central part of the richly creative music scene in Cairo, but in recent years has really made his mark touring the world, both as a solo artist and with the trio The Handover.

Eissa was mentored in formative years by two legendary figures in Egyptian music; composer and multi instrumentalist Abdo Dagher, and oud master Hazem Shahin. The music we are presented with on “Eggshells” is heavily rooted in both Egyptian classical music and a number of different folk music traditions, but goes it´s own way, through expansive and intricate original compositions.

Using the language of folk music traditions to witness and retell our current reality through a feminist lens, they weave together improvised experimental soundscapes, traditional American Sacred Harp hymns, and folk ballads as they sing the tales of precious entities, be they human or environmental, which are subjected to the brutality of contempt, greed, jealousy, violence, and utter disregard.

Pianist Jonas Cambien, bassist Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard and drummer Dag Erik Knedal Andersen have  been indispensable for followers of the creative music scenes in Oslo for a number of years. Only lucky concertgoers have been able to experience their razor sharp improvising trio, but fortunately Motvind Records are about to do something about that!

Between Cambien’s crystal-clear prepared piano and Knedal Andersen’s surgically precise pointillism, Skavhaug Nergaard grounds the music with unconventional bass techniques. They move effortlessly from enveloping drones, with echoes of the British improv tradition, to ecstatic grooves that nod towards free jazz.
